NASA’s future new interplanetary network

Working in Network Test & Measurement is pretty cool, because you get to see all the new technologies even before the Network Equipment Manufacturers R&D labs. For instance, Spirent already has 40G and 100G working modules (we even participated in writing the draft for the standard).

But this new technology, we weren’t involved and I’m not sure we ever will – or any NEM really, NASA will probably develop the equipment themselves. How about transmitting data between Earth and Mars via lasers? It would be interesting to know what kind of Data link, network and transport protocols they’ll use.
